BabyBuzz baby and toddler boutique in Downtown Willow Glen has joined forces with Help A Mother Out to help a number of local organizations in the Bay Area fill a large need for diapers for homeless and low income mothers in our community.

So, the next time you find a stash of diapers your baby has recently outgrown, you know what to do with them! Bring them to BabyBuzz and fill up our new HAMO (Help a Mother Out) diaper drive bin. Open packs of diapers are fine, but please keep them in the original packaging or in a Ziploc bag. BabyBuzz will give you 10% off a purchase for doing so (not valid with other offers; not valid on sale items; not valid on classes or gift certificates). For more information, please phone the shop at 408-885-9870.

Each book season, the Hickelebee's staff reads their agreed upon favorites -- ranging from picture books to novels, fiction and non fiction -- to come up with a title that stands out as the one we most want to put into someone's hands -- confident in the pleasure they will get from our choice. We present them at staff meetings, talk about them throughout the days and finally, vote.

We are thrilled to announce that the 2009 Hicklebee's Book of the Year Award goes to Cold Hands, Warm Heart by Jill Wolfson

At once a romance, a medical thriller, and a meditation on hope, Cold Hands, Warm Heart, grapples with illness, love, death, joy and friendship—the deepest mysteries we human beings experience. And acclaimed author Jill Wolfson tackles the fascinating story with her trademark honesty and wit.

Located in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood, Hicklebee’s is a widely acclaimed independent bookstore. The store specializes exclusively in books for children and young adults. “Hicklebee’s is a champion in the world of reading,” Simitian said. “Over the years they’ve introduced generations of children to the magic of books.”

Founded in 1979, Hicklebee’s is owned by two sisters, Valerie Lewis and Monica Holmes. “We are honored and delighted to be named Senator Simitian’s Small Business of the Year,” said Valerie Lewis. “This April marks Hicklebee’s 30th anniversary here in Willow Glen. We owe a debt of gratitude to our creative staff and to the customers who have kept our dream alive so long.”

“As we watch the continual ‘malling of America,’ we ought to take a moment to appreciate our locally owned, neighborhood bookstores,” Simitian observed. “What makes Hicklebee’s so special is the environment they create for young people. They are helping to grow the next generation of well-read young adults.”
